(9:10 p.m.) Leaving with a record. The last big event of the night ended with a new record.
The Holy Family boys 4×800-meter relay team set a new Class 3A state meet record with a time of 1 minute, 27.86. The previous record (1:28.01) had stood since 2018, which was set by Lutheran. Lutheran finished second with a time of 1:29.02, while The Classical Academy took third in 1:30.40. That’s it for Saturday, a lengthy Day 2.
We’ll catch you for Day 3, State Final Sunday. The first event starts at 9:30 a.m. To find the full schedule, . — Brendan Ploen
(8:23 p.m.) Grandview repeats as Class 5A boys 4×200 champions. The Grandview boys are champions again, as they defended their 4×200-meter relay crown. For the second successive season, the Wolves had a strong finish to take home the title, with a winning time of 1 minute, 26.75 seconds. Fountain Fort-Carson finished second with a time of 1:28.09, while Highlands Ranch earned a bronze with a time of 1:28.22. Eaglecrest won the 5A girls 4×200 in a time of 1 minute, 40.66 seconds. (7:29 p.m.) Naughton repeats as 5A girls high jump champion. Fort Collins senior Brooke Naughton continued her dominance at state with a 5-foot-7 mark on the high jump to win the 5A state title. It marks her second consecutive state win for the event. Naughton, an Iowa State commit, also won the long jump title on Thursday with a leap of 18 feet and 9.75 inches. Naughton is seeking a third individual championship on Sunday as the No. 2 seed in the triple jump. — Kyle Fredrickson
(7:20 p.m.) Stewart upset in 5A girls 800. Cherry Creek senior Riley Stewart, the defending 5A 800-meter race champion, did not repeat her crown on Saturday. Stewart’s teammate, senior Kinsey Christianson, beat her by a narrow margin: 2:07.25 to 2:10.06. — Kyle Fredrickson
(4:41 p.m.) Class 2A 3,200 results. Between preliminaries for the relays and the hurdles, a couple more championships were earned in the 3,200-meter races. Colorado Springs Christian senior Elle Stevens won the girls race in 11:25.03 by out-distancing Peyton’s Eowyn Dalbec down the stretch, while Lyons junior Tyler Ball had wire-to-wire win in the boys race with a time of 9:41:01. — Brendan Ploen
(3:59 p.m.) Liberty Common girls put state on notice. In the preliminaries of the Class 3A girls 4×100-meter relay, Liberty Common — a frontrunner to win the program’s first team title — set a new state record for the classification. The Eagles’ time of 48.82 broke Lutheran’s record of 48.95 from 2017. — Kyle Newman
(2:59 p.m.) Blazing 4A pace set in 3,200. The top three runners in the boys Class 4A 3,200-meter run set a new 4A state meet record. The record, which had stood since 2008, was crushed by Longmont’s Connor McCormick and Cheyenne Mountain’s Tyler Noord and Erik Le Roux, who led the way. It was McCormick who had a massive kick to claim the crown and finish in 9 minutes, 3.83 seconds. The Cheyenne Mountain runners also ran state-meet record-breaking times. Meanwhile, Niwot’s Zane Bergen, a Stanford commit, finished fourth (9:08.60). — Brendan Ploen
(2:10 p.m.) Gates are open, warmups are underway. The Post Sports Staff is here and set up at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood. Everything is shoveled off and the gates just opened up for spectators to come streaming in. As far as conditions go, there are a few wet spots on the track. The shot put and discus areas have been shoveled off and the throwing circles were covered with a tarp, so those will be dry.
We are a few minutes away from getting underway. It will be a long day but it should be a memorable onr at the least.
— Brendan Ploen
(8:20 a.m.) And… we’re back, almost. The second day of state track and field is actually going to happen … starting at 2:10 p.m. today. After the Knights of the Snowpocalypse rolled through the Front Range and took out Friday’s schedule, CHSAA made the call Saturday morning to at Jeffco Stadium.
We hope you brought extra layers, because it’s going to be a cold one. Records might be hard to come by in Day 2 with the unseasonably cold temperatures expected to continue throughout. The meet will conclude with championship events Sunday, and we’ll be here with updates all weekend.
Gates will open to spectators starting at 2 p.m., CHSAA announced, giving stadium staff and officials time to get the venue ready. The 4×400 preliminaries have been nixed from the schedule. An updated schedule for today is below. — Matt Schubert
