A person has died and three others have been arrested following a late-night chase and shootout Wednesday with Denver police.

Police said they came under fire from multiple suspects before returning shots. No officers were injured in the shooting in the Globeville neighborhood, police said.

One of the suspects was shot and taken to the hospital, police said. In a statement released Thursday, the Denver Police Department said the person died.

The person’s name wasn’t released.

Arthur Muteas, 25, was arrested and is being held for investigation of felony eluding. Two others, whose names weren’t released, were being held on unrelated warrants, police said.

Police are looking at whether other charges will be filed.

Denver police Division Chief Ron Thomas said officers originally responded to the report of “individuals armed with a weapon” in the area of West Seventh Avenue and Federal Boulevard around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Suspects were seen by police from the department’s helicopter getting into a silver four-door sedan.

Officers on the ground allegedly attempted making a traffic stop, but the suspect’s vehicle had driven away. Thomas said officers stopped their ground pursuit, using the helicopter to track the suspects instead.

The vehicle stopped in the area of East 49th Avenue and North Washington Street in the Globeville neighborhood, where the suspects got out of their car, Thomas said.

Officers on the ground arrived there and came under gunfire, Thomas said.

Thomas said two officers shot back, injuring one suspect at that location. Two others were taken into custody at the scene, and a fourth was arrested after a search conducted in the area after the shooting.

The shooting led police to place the area from 49th to 50th avenues and Washington to North Pearl streets under a shelter-in-place order.

Thomas said the department will work with the Colorado State Patrol to investigate the shooting of the suspect who died and present the findings to the district attorney for review.
