Englewood police shot and killed a 22-year-old man Sunday night after they said they came under fire while responding to a reported disturbance at a home on South Grove Street, authorities said.

On Monday, the Englewood Police Department announced via Twitter the arrest of a 29-year-old on an attempted-murder charge “for his role in shooting at police officers last night.”

Phillip L. Blankenship will be booked into the Arapahoe County Detention Center on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, police said.

The identity of the man killed by police has not been released, and police have not said whether they believe one or both of the men fired at officers.

Englewood police officials could not immediately be reached.

The Englewood Police Department initially said in a news release that officers were “met with gunfire from inside the house” while investigating a disturbance inside a home in the 5000 block of South Grove Street around 7:39 p.m. Sunday.

The officers returned fire “at the subject who was shooting at them,” police said.

“As a result of the incident, a 22-year-old male subject was killed by gunfire,” police wrote.

No officers were injured, the Englewood Police Department said.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, according to the news release.

The Englewood Police SWAT Team arrived at the scene and “secured the residence,” police said, while the 18th Judicial District’s Critical Incident Response Team came to investigate.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and no other details were available.
