
One of two juveniles shot dead in Northglenn was armed with a semi-automatic handgun when there was an exchange of gunfire with a resident.
The shooting happened at about 2 p.m. on Sunday in the 11600 block of Pearl Street, police said.
The juveniles, who have not been named, broke a fence to enter a backyard and garage-like structure attached to a residence, police said in a Wednesday news release. One juvenile was armed with a handgun and the other a machete when there was an exchange of gunfire with the resident. The juveniles were both taken to a local hospital where they died. The resident was not injured.
Items from a nearby burglary, including an airsoft gun, were recovered from the Pearl Street backyard. “The airsoft gun was not a factor in the shooting,” police said. Both the handgun and machete were recovered from the scene.
An investigation is ongoing and police will present findings to the , which will determine criminal charges, if any, according to the release.
