A Denver judge on Friday sentenced a 28-year-old man to nearly three decades in prison for stabbing his half-sister to death two years ago.
Darsean Kelley in August pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. On Friday, he received a 27-year sentence, the Denver district attorney said in a news release.
On Jan. 23, 2020, authorities found the body of 17-year-old Marnee Kelley-Mills’ — Kelley’s half-sister — stuffed inside a duffel bag in a trash can in front of their Montbello home.
Darsean Kelley had been battling schizophrenia for years, his mother said during a candlelight vigil after the killing. Mental health care providers and the justice system let him down, Vicky Lewis said at the time.
