The fire burned in the 1300 block of South Parker Road, according to a 12:21 p.m. tweet from South Metro Fire District.
Firefighters encountered flames and heavy smoke on the second and third floors of a multi-residential building.
South Metro, Aurora and Denver firefighters worked on the fire. The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office and Aurora police were on scene. Injuries suffered by the people who were taken to the hospital were described as “minor.”
The fire is under control, SMFR said in a 2:11 p.m. tweet. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Three apartment units were destroyed by the fire and several buildings are without power, said John Seward, an American Red Cross spokesman.
Residents from about 85 units are displaced by the fire and its aftermath, SMFR said on Tuesday night.
The Red Cross offered aid to fire victims as snow settled into the area and the temperature, at about 4:30 p.m., had dropped to 36 degrees. “We are prepared to open an overnight shelter if the power cannot be restored,” Seward said. Snow is expected overnight and into Friday morning.
