A Lafayette police officer shot and killed a man after the man injured a police officer during an early Tuesday morning confrontation over a stolen vehicle, the Lafayette Police Department said in a statement.

About 1:22 a.m. Tuesday, officers received a license plater reader alert about a stolen vehicle in the area of South Boulder Road and Dixon Avenue. Officers found the vehicle, a Toyota Camry, unattended at a Circle K gas station pump.

When officers arrived, the suspects left the store and fled on foot. One of the suspects returned to the Camry and began firing a handgun at officers, striking one in the leg, the department said.

An officer then returned fire, and the man died in the stolen vehicle at the gas station. The other person was detained.

The officer who was injured is in stable condition after being taken to a hospital. The officer was also placed on administrative leave.

The Boulder County Investigation Team, also known as the Boulder Critical Incident Team (BCIT), will investigate the shooting.
