At about noon, the highway closed in both directions from Brush to Sterling, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. I-76 a short time later closed, in both directions, from the Nebraska state line to Red Lion Road, which is east of Colorado 59 and Sedgwick. It wasn’t long after that the entire stretch of highway from Brush to Nebraska, about 94 miles, shut down.
U.S. Highway 138 was closed in both directions from Sterling to Nebraska on Friday afternoon. That stretch of highway runs adjacent to I-76 north of the interstate. It reopened in both directions at about 4:50 p.m., according to CDOT.
Long portions of I-76 were shut down as well on Wednesday and Thursday by accidents, adverse weather and dangerous driving conditions as strong winds whipped up blizzard-like conditions on the plains. Other roads in northeastern Colorado have been shut down this week by the winter storm and winds.
