Denver police apprehended two suspects involved in a shooting Monday outside Denver’s East High School that left a 16-year-old student injured.

The shooting occurred just after 2:30 p.m. near 17th and City Park Esplanade, police said, leading to a brief lockdown at the nearby high school.

Authorities located two suspects after a brief pursuit and took them into custody, said Joe Montoya, division chief of investigations, during an afternoon news conference.

Investigators did not know of any motive for the shooting, which left the male student with a “poor prognosis”, Montoya said.

“We really need the community to come together on this,” he said regarding youth violence in Denver. “We need to find a way to disengage these young people from these violent tendencies.”

Police have not said if the two suspects were also East students.
