has donated $10 million to the Make-A-Wish foundation.
The six-time champion and current Charlotte Hornets owner made the contribution — the — to mark his 60th birthday.
“For the past 34 years, it’s been an honor to partner with Make-A-Wish and help bring a smile and happiness to so many kids,” Jordan . “Witnessing their strength and resilience during such a tough time in their lives has truly been an inspiration.
“I can’t think of a better birthday gift than seeing others join me in supporting Make-A-Wish so that every child can experience the magic of having their wish come true,” he added.
Since first donating to the organization in 1989, “The Last Dance” star has granted hundreds of wishes and was named Make-A-Wish Chief Wish Ambassador in 2008. Despite retiring from the NBA for a second time in 2003, His Airness continues to be one of the most-requested celebrities.
The organization said Jordan is scheduled to meet with nine children in March.
“Everyone knows about Michael’s legacy on the basketball court, but it’s what he has consistently done off the court when no one’s watching that makes him a true legend for wish families and the wider Make-A-Wish community,” Leslie Motter, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish America, said in the news release.
“Michael using his birthday as a chance to make history for Make-A-Wish speaks to the quality of his character and his loyal dedication to making life better for children with critical illnesses.”
Since 1980, Make-A-Wish has granted more than 360,000 wishes in the U.S.
Jordan is no stranger to philanthropy, having donated to a number of schools, clinics and libraries in his native as well as causes like and . In 2016, he $5 million to the Smithsonian in support of the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
