More than four years after a 3-year-old boy was found dead in a Denver apartment, the boyfriend of the child’s mother has been found guilty of first-degree murder, child abuse and reckless endangerment.
John Affourtit, 37, was convicted Friday by a Denver jury for the Sept. 25, 2018, incident, according to a Monday press release from the Denver District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors said Affourtit killed his girlfriend’s son, Jeromiah Gurule, in the apartment the couple shared in the 900 block of South Dahlia Street. The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner determined the boy died as a result of blunt-force trauma.
Affourtit was arrested the day after medical personnel responded to his apartment. He was charged with murder a couple of weeks later.
Affourtit will be sentenced on April 6.
