There is no threat to the public, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said in a 1:44 p.m. tweet.
An investigation is underway and some area roads are closed.
At about 10 a.m., deputies responded to the 13000 block of Pine Country Lane on a welfare check for a man described as “despondent and threatening suicide,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they heard a single shot in the area. An armed man was contacted and deputies negotiated with the man, who was “threatening to kill himself,” for about two hours, attempting to get him to put down his weapon, officials said. The sheriff’s office SWAT team was dispatched to the scene.
At one point, the man placed the shotgun on the ground, “at which time deputies fired less-than-lethal shots, hitting the suspect twice, in an effort to resolve the standoff,” the news release said. “The suspect then immediately picked up the shotgun, pointed it directly at deputies, and fired. Two deputies returned fire, striking and killing the suspect.”
The man’s identity was not released Wednesday pending notification of family.
The incident happened in a remote area, around Callae and Piano Meadows drives, the sheriff’s office said. A short stretch of each of those roads is closed during the investigation.
The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office Critical Incident Response Team is leading the investigation regarding the officer-involved shooting.
The two deputies who fired at the man are on administrative leave, per office policy, pending an ongoing investigation.
