A man in custody at the Denver Sheriff Department downtown detention center died after experiencing a medical emergency Tuesday morning, according to a statement from the department.
The man experienced the emergency at about 8:35 a.m. in a housing unit, per the statement. A medical team was immediately called to perform initial lifesaving efforts on the scene, and paramedics later arrived to transport him to Denver Health Medical Center where he died later in the afternoon.
The department has opened an investigation into the incident and can share no information at this time, communications director Daria Serna confirmed Tuesday. The coroner’s office was closed for the day and unreachable for comment.
