Murder-suicide shuts down part of Jefferson County with shelter-in-place order, road closures

An apparent murder-suicide shut down part of Jefferson County early Monday morning with a shelter-in-place order and road closures, all now lifted.

Just after 12:15 a.m. Monday, deputies responded to reports of a domestic violence incident at a home in the 4300 block of South Holland Way, according to a Monday news release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

A family member had called police from inside the home, saying that the father had a gun and was shooting at the mother, the news release stated.

When deputies arrived at the scene, the suspect had barricaded himself in the Jefferson County home, . The suspect fired shots at the three children who had escaped the home and at arriving deputies, the news release stated.

One of the children was shot in the leg and later transported to a local hospital. A bullet also hit the pant leg of a deputy, but made contact with a cell phone and did not injure him, the release stated.

No deputies returned fire.

The Jefferson County SWAT team responded and surrounded the home. Around 5 a.m., the sheriff’s office issued a shelter-in-place warning for homes in the immediate area and closed West Quincy Avenue from Garrison Street to Kipling Street, according to the department’s social media post.

At 5:10 a.m., that the incident had been resolved and there was no threat to the public. Roads reopened shortly after.

When the SWAT team entered the home, they found a dead woman who had been beaten and shot, according to Monday’s news release. They also found the suspect, 54-year-old James Aragon, who died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The news release states the children are in the care of family members.
