A ski area in southwest Colorado will remain closed for the 2023-24 winter season after discovering a mechanical issue with its sole chairlift.

near Durango announced the decision Wednesday, stating the gearbox on its Bighorn chairlift failed and cannot be replaced because there are no comparable parts available on the market. Neither downhill nor uphill skiing will be permitted, as the parking lots and mountain terrain will not maintained. No tubing will be offered either.

“The gearbox is the liftap transmission, as it connects the motor to the drive bullwheel and is crucial for the liftap operation. The only viable option is to re-manufacture the original gearbox, making it impossible to open Hesperus Ski Area for the 23-24 season,” the announcement said.

With 60 skiable acres, Hesperus’ quaint feel has made it a local favorite, especially among folks from Durango. But this is not the first time the lift has caused trouble during ski season. In 2017, after Purgatory owner James Coleman purchased Hesperus, safety issues with the chairlift shut down the ski area.

Hesperus season pass and value pass holders can use a credit for the price they paid toward a pass at the nearby Purgatory Resort. Value pass holders may also do a direct exchange for a two-day pass at Purgatory.

Those who purchased uphill skiing passes may or apply the credit toward Purgatory passes and lift tickets.
