Man shot, killed by Lakewood officers after reports of shots fired in La Quinta Inn

Lakewood police officers fatally shot an armed man in La Quinta Inn Saturday after responding to reports of shots fired.

Officers ordered the man to drop his weapon, but fired on him when he came toward the officers instead, according to a .

Around 7:15 a.m., Lakewood officers responded to reports of shots fired on the fifth floor of La Quinta Inn at 7190 West Hampden Ave., the release stated.

When officers arrived, they found the suspect in the hallway armed with a knife and ordered him to drop his weapon, according to the release. The suspect was identified in a Wednesday release as Zacariah Devore, 47.

Devore failed to disarm himself and began approaching the officers while also holding a large dog, according to that release. Three Lakewood officers shot at and struck Devore and the dog.

Officers attempted medical aid, but Devore died from his injuries at the scene. The dog also died.

Police recovered a gun at the scene and confirmed that shots were fired inside of Devore’s room before officers arrived, the release stated.

The shooting is under investigation by the Jefferson County Critical Response Team and the three officers have been placed on administrative leave.
