An 18-year-old who fatally shot a man who was driving on Interstate 70 in a 2022 road rage killing has been sentenced to 22 years in prison, Denver District Attorney officials announced.

Jameel James received the sentence Tuesday from Judge Adam Espinosa. James was 17 at the time of the killing on I-70 near the intersection with Quebec Street. He had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Kevin Piaskowski, 31.

The shooting happened at 10:58 p.m. on July 31, 2022, after a stolen Dodge Ram was tailgating Piaskowski’s vehicle and he slowed down, according to an affidavit. The driver of the truck changed lanes and James fired multiple shots at Piaskowski before crashing into a semi-truck and another car and fleeing on foot, the affidavit said.
