Arvada police arrested a 30-year-old substitute teacher and after-school worker on child sex assault and child abuse charges Wednesday.

Justin Joshua Martinez was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and misdemeanor child abuse, the said in a news release. The felony assault charge included that the victim was younger than 15 and was part of a pattern of abuse.

Martinez most recently worked in the before- and after-school programs at Red Rocks Elementary School in Morrison, Arvada police said.

He was hired in 2011 and worked in after-school programs and as a substitute teacher across the school district, including at Lawrence, Stevens, Vivian, Swanson, Secrest and West Woods elementary schools in Arvada, Wheat Ridge and Lakewood.

Martinez is in custody at the Jefferson County Jail and set to appear in court Wednesday.
