Routes across Colorado’s Eastern Plains remained closed Saturday after a formidable winter storm dropped multiple feet of snow on the state.
Denver freeways and all of Interstate 25 had reopened as of 10:45 a.m., and Interstate 70 was back open on both sides of E-470 by the afternoon, though sections of several state and federal highways east of I-25 and south of Denver remained closed
Rural counties were among the areas hardest hit by the storm — in Lincoln County, search-and-rescue operations were ongoing Saturday morning, with multiple rescuers and motorists stranded.
Capt. Michael Yowell of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office warned drivers to respect highway closures and not endanger themselves and others by taking their chances on county roads.
“When you come to a road closure gate, thatap bad getting worse,” he said. “Don’t try to beat it.”
A hazardous weather outlook remains in effect for northeast and north-central Colorado, with the National Weather Service urging caution among drivers and advising them to respect ongoing road closures.
