A Pueblo man shot by Chaffee County police on Wednesday after barricading himself inside a home near Salida and firing at officers was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and domestic violence, state investigators said.

Richard Chad Borrego, 54, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer, two counts of assault and 18 counts of menacing, all felonies, as well as other charges.

Chaffee County sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic violence call at a home west of Salida around 4 p.m. Wednesday, Colorado Bureau of Investigation officials said Thursday.

When deputies arrived, the woman who called 911 had already left the house and was inside a neighbor’s home. Borrego refused to leave the house and barricaded himself inside, state officials said.

A tactical team with officers from Chaffee County, Salida and Buena Vista used tear gas inside the home to try to convince Borrego to surrender, and moments later he shot at police from an upstairs window.

Three Chaffee County deputies and a Salida police officer returned fire and hit Borrego once in his right arm, according to CBI.

Officers used more tear gas in the home, and Borrego left the home at approximately 7:51 p.m. He was taken to a local medical clinic, later transferred to a Colorado Springs hospital and is in stable condition.

No officers were injured in the shooting, and the four officers who shot at Borrego are on paid administrative leave while CBI investigates the police shooting.
