An emu wandering the streets of Lakewood caused a stir near a Regional Transportation District train station Monday morning.

The loose bird was first spotted at about 7:45 a.m. Monday near an apartment complex at 1615 Pierson St., Lakewood police spokesperson Lindsey Witzel said.

People in the area saw Lakewood officers chasing the bird near RTD’s Oak Station, trying to capture it, .

Oak Station is home to the W Line, which connects Union Station to the Jefferson County Government Center-Golden Station, and RTD  bus routes 16 and 17.

It’s unclear how the emu escaped, but Lakewood officers were able to wrangle the bird into an animal control van and return it home, Witzel said.
