Nearly 500 flights at Denver International Airport delayed Monday amid storms

Nearly 500 flights were delayed Monday at Denver International Airport as afternoon thunderstorms triggered a new ground delay, according to the .

As of 2:45 p.m. Monday, 491 flights had been delayed and five had been canceled, according to .

Delays started to pile up at about 8:30 a.m. Monday, when low-hanging clouds prompted a ground stop at the airport. That traffic management program turned into a ground delay at 10 a.m., FAA officials said.

The first ground delay was lifted around 11 a.m., but a second one was issued just before 3 p.m. as thunderstorms moved into the area.

Southwest delayed 223 flights, followed by 102 from United, 103 from SkyWest, 22 from American Airlines, 21 from Frontier and 11 from Delta. Five other airlines delayed between one and five flights.

United canceled three flights on Monday, according to FlightAware. SkyWest, a regional airline that operates United Express, canceled two.

As of 2:45 p.m. Monday, flights headed in and out of DIA were being delayed by an average of 48 minutes, . Those delays are expected to increase Monday evening, with 78-minute delays forecast after 4 p.m., officials said.
