An East High School student was detained after taking a gun on campus in his bag, school officials said in an email to parents this week.
Denver Public Schools safety officers on Thursday received a report that a student had a gun on school property, and they attempted to escort the student out of class to somewhere private, principal Terita Walker wrote in an email to the East High community.
“The student resisted, and he was placed in handcuffs for the safety of everyone involved. Officers later found a gun in his bag,” Walker wrote.
The confirmed officers detained a juvenile on Thursday morning but declined to release further information because the person was younger than 18.
Several shootings have shaken the East High School community in recent years, including the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Luis Garcia while sitting in his car outside the school in February 2023 and two administrators who were shot by a student in March 2023 while searching him for weapons.
Walker told parents and community members that “safety and well-being of our students is our top priority” and all threats are taken seriously and investigated.
A Denver Public Schools spokesperson could not be reached for comment immediately.
