A man died Wednesday morning after he was hit by a car while walking in the street in southeast Aurora, police said.

Aurora officers responded to reports of a person lying in the road near East Hampden Avenue and South Picadilly Road about 6 a.m. Wednesday, according to a news release from the police.

Paramedics took the man to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said. He will be identified by the Arapahoe County coroner’s office.

Investigators believe the man was pushing a shopping cart in an eastbound lane of East Hampden Avenue when he was hit by a vehicle traveling in the same direction, according to the release. That intersection is just south of the Plains Conservation Center and west of E-470.

The vehicle left the scene, possibly continuing east, police said.

Police had not located witnesses or suspects as of Wednesday afternoon.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867
