A baby at the Denver Zoo has died, officials said Tuesday.

Zoo officials announced in November that first-time parents Winnie and Santiago were expecting a pup, which would be the first lesser anteater born at the zoo in over a decade. Winnie was expected to give birth in late January, but the baby was born premature on Saturday.

“Our Animal Care and Veterinary Medicine teams immediately jumped into action and worked tirelessly over the weekend to try to stabilize the baby,” Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance officials wrote on social media. “Despite their best efforts, the pup sadly passed away on (Sunday).”

Winnie is doing well, and zoo staff are closely monitoring her health, according to the organization.

“This outcome was unexpected and has been a hard loss for our teams,” zoo officials said Tuesday.
