The man arrested for reportedly stabbed his 71-year-old grandfather and his mother, and strangled his grandmother, two days after being arrested for assaulting his grandparents, an arrest affidavit states.

Adrian Navarrete, 23, was arrested at gunpoint at a home in the 2200 block of Dexter Drive around 8 a.m. Wednesday, when police found the man’s grandfather, 71, lying in a pool of blood and apparently unconscious during a search of the house, according to the affidavit. Two days earlier, Navarrete was arrested and accused of pushing his grandparents to the floor.

The grandfather suffered several stab and slash wounds to his head, neck, face, upper chest and stomach in the Wednesday attack, the affidavit states. Navarrete’s mother was also found with several stab wounds, according to the affidavit.

Police found a blood-covered knife on the floor in the house, the affidavit states.

Navarrete faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, second-degree assault, first-degree assault on an at-risk person, first-degree burglary, menacing, criminal mischief and violation of a protection order in the Wednesday incident, according to Longmont city spokesperson Robin Ericson.

Both the grandfather and mother are expected to survive, Ericson said. When police interviewed Navarrete, he said he came to the house on Wednesday to collect his belongings after being released from jail on the assault charges from the Monday incident, the affidavit states. His appearance at the residence violated a court order that mandated he not have any contact with his grandparents because of that incident.

Navarrete told police he jumped the back fence and knocked on the kitchen window. When his grandfather came to the door, the grandfather told Navarrete that he had raped Navarrete’s mother, the suspect told police. Longmont police were unable to answer questions about those allegations because the investigation is ongoing, according to spokesperson Rogelio Mares.

Thatap when Navarrete threw a sledgehammer through the sliding glass door and got into a fight with his grandfather. The 23-year-old grabbed a large kitchen knife and stabbed his grandfather. He later claimed the stabbing was self-defense because his grandfather tried to grab him, according to the affidavit.

Navarrete stabbed his mother when she approached, later telling police he did it because she scared him, the affidavit states.

Navarrete said he was “seeing black,” “seeing red” and “seeing murder,” according to the affidavit, and told police he knew his actions were wrong and that he was not supposed to be at the house.

Navarrete’s grandmother told police he had strangled her during the Wednesday incident, and that she pretended to be dead to get him to stop, according to the affidavit. It is not clear where the strangling falls in the timeline of attacks on the grandfather and mother.

Navarrete had been released Tuesday from the Boulder County Jail on a $2,500 bail after being arrested on Monday on third-degree assault charges. His grandparents accused him of pushing them to the floor during an argument about assistance around the house on Monday, according to an arrest affidavit.

Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty said in a statement that his office would continue to assist the Longmont Public Safety Department in the investigation.

“Our team will fight for justice for the victims who were wounded.”

Navarrete remains in custody at the Boulder County Jail in the Wednesday stabbing on a $300,000 cash or surety bail. He is set for a return filing of charges at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
