A man was in Wheat Ridge after pulling a gun out of a car following a Saturday morning crash, police said.

The shooting happened after a GMC Yukon crashed into a Honda Pilot and then into the garage of a home near West 32nd Avenue and Pierce Street at about 10:38 a.m., according to a news release from the Edgewater Police Department.

Police said the man, who was a passenger in the Yukon, got out of the car after the crash and grabbed a gun.

The police officer “confronted” the man, and there was “an exchange of gunfire,” police said in the release. It’s unclear how many times the officer and the man shot at each other, but the man was struck at least once. Paramedics took him to the hospital in critical condition, police said.

Neither the man shot or the woman driving the Yukon had been publicly identified as of Sunday morning.

The Edgewater officer was not injured in the shooting, and paramedics took the woman to a hospital for injuries from the crash, police said. The Honda Pilot driver was evaluated for minor injuries at a hospital.

Information on the cause of the crash was not available on Sunday. The crash remained under investigation by the Wheat Ridge Police Department.

The First Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team was investigating the police shooting.

As of Saturday night, the officer involved had been placed on administrative leave pending the results of that investigation.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
