A metal case that contained five suspected bombs was found and removed from an area near Ponderosa Way in western Boulder County, north of Pinecliffe, on Sunday morning.
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office found the suspected improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, in a metal case near Ponderosa Way, after someone opened the case and reported them to the sheriff’s office, according to a . The IEDs had features consistent with functioning devices, but investigators have not yet determined whether they were functional.
Deputies responded to the area around 8 a.m. and issued a shelter-in-place order around noon Sunday, according to the release. By 7 p.m., the devices were contained and removed to a secure location, and the shelter-in-place order was lifted, the release states.
Officials will work to dispose of the bombs, after which time they can figure out whether they were functional, according to the release.
“Bomb Squad technicians needed to adjust tactics during the operation for safety reasons, which extended the time needed to secure the devices,” the release states.
It was unclear how officials needed to adjust their tactics and why they needed to do so.The sheriff’s office asks that anyone who sees a suspicious package or item not touch or move it but leave the area immediately and call 911.
