A man killed in a crash Friday on Interstate 25 near Happy Canyon Road was backing up his Chevrolet Equinox on the right northbound shoulder when an Audi Q5 hit the back of the vehicle, the Colorado State Patrol said.
The driver in the Equinox had drifted into the right lane as it was backing up, the CSP said in a statement Monday. A Toyota Highlander traveling north in the right traffic lane then struck the Audi.
The Equinox came to rest on the shoulder. The Audi and the Highlander stopped on I-25, blocking traffic. The northbound lanes were closed for roughly four hours.
The Equinox driver, a 31-year-old Aurora man, died at the scene. The Douglas County Coroner’s Office will identify the man once notifications are made.
The driver of the Audi, a 46-year-old woman from Parker, was taken to a hospital for serious injuries. The driver of the Highlander, a 58-year-old woman from Castle Pines, was taken to a hospital for moderate injuries.
The CSP is leading the investigation. Anyone who saw the crash and hasn’t spoken to investigators can call CSP dispatch at (303) 239-4501.
