Eastbound Interstate 76 was closed for hours on Tuesday near Arvada after a semitrailer spilled fuel across the highway, state transportation officials said.

Investigators believe a semitrailer hauling asphalt was entering eastbound I-76 near Sheridan Boulevard shortly before 7:45 a.m. Tuesday when its drive shaft broke, damaging the hydraulic lines and puncturing the fuel tank, according to a news release from the Colorado State Patrol.

As of 1:15 p.m., the spill had been cleared and eastbound I-76 had reopened at Sheridan Boulevard, according to . The closure blocking traffic from Interstate 70 from entering eastbound I-76 had also lifted.

Colorado State Patrol’s hazmat team responded to the incident with local fire crews to contain and mitigate the fuel spill, agency officials said. No injuries were reported.
