The southwest of Lyons on Tuesday died after drifting about 1.5 miles from where officials think he fell.

Bad cellular connection prevented the boy’s family members from quickly calling 911, so they had to find a passing driver, flag them down and hitch a ride to an area with service, according to a Boulder County Sheriff’s Office news release. The family called 911 shortly before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday evening, and officials didn’t get the boy out of the water until about 7:07 p.m., the release states.

The boy and his family were camping nearby when he fell into the water, the release states.

Multiple law enforcement crews searched along the creek, using water rescue teams, crews on foot, crews in vehicles and drones to try and find the boy, according to the release.

On Tuesday, the boy was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Officials had earlier believed two children had fallen into the water, but the second child was later accounted for.

The boy’s identity will be released after officials positively identify him and notify next of kin, the release states. The Boulder County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death, according to the release.
