The Rockies made a series of pitching moves ahead of Saturday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants after scratching starter Tomoyuki Sugano.

The club placed Sugano (back spasms) and reliever Seth Halvorsen (shoulder inflammation) on the 15-day injured list — retroactive to July 1 and called up Sean Sullivan from Triple-A Albuquerque. The Rockies also selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Jordan Romano from Albuquerque.

Sugano, 36, a star in Japan, signed a one-year, $5.1 million contract with the Rockies ahead of the season after pitching for the Baltimore Orioles last season. Across 16 starts this season, he is 8-4 with a 4.80 ERA, 48 strikeouts and a 1.32 WHIP.

Halvorsen has appeared in 21 games this season with a 4.74 ERA.

Sullivan, selected in the second round of the 2023 draft from Wake Forest, has struggled in four major league starts this season. He made his big-league debut on June 12 and enters Saturday night’s start with an 0-2 record, an 8.64 ERA, and 12 strikeouts over 16 2/3 innings.

Romano has appeared in 291 major league games over eight seasons for the Blue Jays, Phillies, and Angels, with a 22-23 career record and a 3.64 ERA.
