Denver will no longer close its DMV locations on a rolling basis beginning in August, ending a cost-saving practice that began in 2024 in response to the city’s migrant crisis, according to a .

The closures, in which one of four of the city’s DMV branches was closed down each week on a four-week rolling basis, have frustrated residents over the past two years.

“We’ve heard from staff and customers alike how difficult the rolling closures have been, and we are very excited to now be in a position to create more stability and consistency in the customer and staff experience at each branch,” said Sophia Hassman, the city treasurer and interim DMV director, in the release.

The closures were done “in order to help maintain service in all corners of the city during a period of slowed city hiring and economic uncertainty,” according to the release.

The city used several cost-saving measures, including reducing recreation center hours and programming, to offset the expense of housing thousands of migrants who poured into the city beginning in late 2022. The city has since restored rec center hours.

The reopenings come as the city hires more people to work the DMV locations.

Before the full DMV reopening on Aug. 3, all locations will be closed Wednesday for “staff development and training,” the release says. The DMV website and kiosks, which offer most services including new vehicle registration and address changes, will remain open.

The city will also transition the Tremont DMV office, located in the Elbra M Wedgeworth Municipal Building, into a commercial vehicle dealer and fleet center. The center will serve only vehicle dealers and commercial fleet customers, according to the release.
