Here are some chores to do in your garden this week:
Check irrigation system for clogged or damaged sprinkler heads. Check and adjust alignment of the heads to be sure they provide accurate coverage that doesn’t waste water.
Clean up and dispose of leaves and debris around roses and lilacs. They may possess over-
wintering powdery mildew spores that can re-infect plants.
Prune dead wood and unwanted branches to improve the shape of trees and shrubs. Thin out old branches on shrubs to encourage air circulation and promote new growth. Avoid shearing or topping shrubs and trees.
Cut back or remove dead foliage of perennials and grasses left to self-mulch last fall.
Plant summer-flowering dahlias, cannas and gladioli. Stagger plantings about every two weeks for six to eight weeks to maximize blooming periods.
Compost yard waste for future reinvestment into the soil.
