Pueblo – The Army will begin work next week on a live-fire training range near the Colorado-New Mexico border to simulate conditions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The site, about 180 miles south of Denver, includes a mock village. The 21,000-acre firing range is deep inside a 237,000-acre Army site to help prevent fire from straying outside.

It is expected to open Aug. 1.

An environmental impact assessment prompted little public comment, said Tom Warren, Fort Carson director of environmental compliance and management. The Army is determining how many historic sites on the range must be protected. Wildlife will be herded out of the area.
