Spreading across a prairie landscape northeast of the city, the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge stands as Denver’s premier natural area. Not incidentally, it also offers one of the best close-to-home opportunities for warm-water fishing. The property is open each Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Oct. 9. for a $3 daily fee. Exceptionally large northern pike, largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish are available for catch-and-release barbless hooks. Anglers age 16 and older must complete a brief orientation. A Colorado fishing license is required. To promote this resource, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will host a special “Fishing Fever” event 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on May 14 featuring a variety of wildlife-related activities suitable for the entire family. Visitors may learn about fly-tying, fishing and proper fish-handling techniques. Children may fish in the Small Fry pond. A tram tour to view wildlife will be available, as will a tour of the wildlife learning lab. A number of fishing shops and manufacturers will join the Division of Wildlife in demonstrations and making a limited amount of tackle available on loan.
