Tony Mustari, a three-time state wrestling champion at Greeley Central, has been named Colorado’s recipient of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award.

It is based on wrestling success, scholastic achievement and citizenship or community service.

The national winner will be announced in June at the Hall of Fame’s Honors Weekend in Stillwater, Okla.

Mustari won Colorado titles at 112 (twice) and 119 pounds. His career record was 161-11, and he won 125 of his past 126 matches. He also did not give up a point in a span of 40 matches over his past two seasons.

A multiple All-American, he will wrestle next season at the University of Northern Colorado.

Creek earns more plaudits

Cherry Creek in Greenwood Village and its phenomenal sports programs over the past five decades, recognized in this week’s Sports Illustrated as fifth-best nationally, has won 162 Colorado championships.

The Bruins have produced the likes of six-time Olympic gold medal swimmer Amy Van Dyken and Houston Astros closer Brad Lidge.

Cherry Creek also won 316 consecutive dual boys tennis matches from 1972 to 2000, a national record.
