John “Jack” Bishop, a Denver police detective who survived a shooting that killed fellow officer Donald “Donnie” Young, said today the past few days have been a roller coaster and that he feels extremely lucky but equally guilty.
Bishop and Young were ambushed Sunday while they were working off-duty providing security at a baptism celebration. Both men were in uniform.
Police say 19-year-old suspect Raul Garcia-Gomez approached the officers from behind. Police are still looking today for Gomez.
At a news conference today, Bishop said he knew something was wrong when he felt a sting to his back and saw Young, who police say was shot three times.
He said Young’s wife and two daughters are strong and have an enormous circle of support.
Bishop said when he’s playing with his two young children during the day, he can push what happened to the back of his mind.
“But when I have a few minutes to myself, I just think about it and that’s when it gets really difficult,” he said, choking up.
