Bert Grant’s Mandarin Hefeweizen
Many oddities have been committed in the name of hefeweizen.
The old, old, traditional German wheat beer has become increasingly popular with Americans who prefer a lighter summertime brew.
Bert Grant’s Mandarin Hefeweizen takes the tradition in an entirely different direction. It tastes and smells like an orange soda but at the same time is a very refreshing beer, perfect for summer consumption.
The late Bert Grant was one of the founding fathers of the microbrew revolution. I’m not sure what he would make of this hefeweizen variation made by Yakima (Wash.) Brewing and Malting.
Highly carbonated, there’s little evidence of hops and only a slight malt sweetness. A beer (although it is called “a malt beverage” on the label) for people who don’t like the taste of beer.
The Bert Grant beers are available nationwide in 12-ounce six-packs.
