A flood watch remained in effect today for parts of Colorado’s Western Slope as near-record heat went to work on the state’s ample snowpack.

Meanwhile, Denver’s temperatures soared toward the record high for the date of 91 degrees.

The National Weather Service today continued its flood watch for portions of Delta, Mesa, Montrose, Montezuma, La Plata and Archuleta counties.

The agency said that warm temperatures over the next several days will lead to significant snowmelt in area rivers and streams.

People along the Gunnison, Mancos and La Plata rivers were particularly cautioned, and the Animas and San Juan rivers could rise by early next week.

“Those residing in low-lying or flood prone areas near any river or creek (in the area) should closely monitor water levels and be prepared to take action,” the Weather Service said.

In the Denver area, the weekend should bring a gradual cooldown, with highs in the mid-80s Saturday and the 70s Sunday, before the weather warms again next week.
