Two-time Olympic medalist and three-time world outdoor champion John Godina, a graduate of Cheyenne Central High School, won Monday’s shot put competition at the Payton Jordan U.S. Open at Stanford University’s Cobb Track & Angell Field in Palo Alto, Calif.
His third-round throw of 71 feet, 11 1/2 inches is the second- best performance in the world this year.
Godina has the top four throws in the world in 2005.
After winning the 2005 USA indoor title, and with it the inaugural USATF Indoor Visa Championship Series crown, Godina entered Monday’s competition owning the longest throw in the world this outdoor season with his personal best toss of 72-10 in winning the Adidas Track Classic on May 22.
Juco tourney continues
South Mountain (Ariz.) eliminated Hutchinson (Kan.) from the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction with an 11-8 victory.
Wallace State (Ala.) improved to 2-0 in the tournament with a 10-5 victory over Texarkana (Texas).
Wallace State will play Potomac (W.Va.) State today at 7:30 p.m., and Texarakana will play St. Petersburg (Fla.) at 11 a.m.
