A kayaker who drowned in South Boulder Creek was identified Friday as James McFarland, 34, of Golden.
McFarland was sucked under a current about 7 p.m. Thursday while attempting to shoot some rapids with four other kayakers in Walker Ranch Park.
Two of the kayakers stood by with safety ropes while the others attempted to make it through the white water, authorities said.
One kayaker got through, but McFarland got hung up. He was attempting to swim to shore when he was sucked under.
The kayakers pulled him out but he had been underwater for 18 minutes.
McFarland was flown to Boulder Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
