Everyone knew large walleye and wiper remained at Cherry Creek Reservoir. It’s just that hardly anyone has been able to catch them lately.
That ended Wednesday when Dave Carrington of Englewood landed a walleye that weighed more than 13 pounds and followed up with a wiper that topped 14.
That’s only part of the story. Carrington and his partner, Kevin Gibbs of Aurora, boated several other walleye between 22 and 25 inches that day. This bonanza followed two other days of exceptional results. Gibbs and Carrington boated 15 walleye between 20 and 25 inches on Tuesday, two days after Gibbs and his brother- in-law, Steve Ryan, made a similar catch before being rained out.
The big fish fell for an in-line worm harness with a night crawler spiced by a small spinner Gibbs devised.
“I tried all the fancy things but they didn’t work,” Gibbs said.
As for solving the mystery of the missing fish, Gibbs said, “I think we found the spot.”
He declined to say precisely where.
