The Anaheim Storm is out of the National Lacrosse League, and franchises in Edmonton, Alberta, and Portland, Ore., are joining the league.

The NLL will have 11 teams for the 2006 season. The team divisional format will be announced at a later date, as will a date for a dispersal draft of Anaheim players.

Applications for expansion franchises in the New York and New England markets will remain under consideration, with the two teams possibly joining in 2007.

Brazil tops U.S. volleyball

Brazil spoiled the debut of “Jenny” Lang Ping as coach of the USA women’s national volleyball team as it posted a 3-1 victory in the second match of the Front Range Tour at Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins on Saturday night.

Thaisa Menezes scored a team-high 21 points and Adenizia Silva added 14 points in the 25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 25-23 victory as Brazil rebounded from a 3-0 loss in the opener Thursday night in Denver.

Nancy Metcalf, a 2004 Olympian, led all scorers with 25 points on 22 kills and three blocks for Team USA.

The tour concludes Monday with a 6:30 p.m. match at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

Rainy weather forced the postponement of the Auto Trader 150 NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division, Midwest Series combination event scheduled Saturday at Colorado National Speedway.

The event has been tentatively rescheduled for this afternoon, with gates opening at 7 a.m. and racing beginning at 4:10 p.m.

George Washington High School’s Darius Reed won the 110-meter hurdle event at the 30th Great Southwest Classic in Albuquerque on Saturday. Reed’s time of 14.00 was .03 of a second better than Jansen Hyde of Mesquite, Texas. The meet includes athletes from Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

Kira Robinson, of Mullen High School, finished second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 13.64. Shalina Clark of Evanston, Ill., won the event with a time of 13.51. Also, Montbello’s Chealsea Taylor finished third in the high jump after jumping a 5 feet, 8 1/2 inches in the finals.

Danielle Kachulis, a junior at Kent Denver in Cherry Hills Village, was named one of the top five players in the nation at the U.S. Lacrosse National Tournament on Memorial Day Weekend in Lehigh, Pa. Kachulis also was named one of the finalists for the Heather Leigh Albert Award to recognize the nation’s outstanding schoolgirl player.
