East Rutherford, N.J. – Jeff Cunningham scored his league-leading ninth goal in the 60th minute Saturday night to give the Rapids a 1-1 tie with the MetroStars.
After an uneventful and sluggish first half, which produced few scoring opportunities, the MetroStars took the lead in the 51st minute when Ante Razov took a pass from Amado Guevara and beat goalkeeper Joe Cannon from 30 yards.
Cannon got his hands on the shot, but he could not corral it and the ball trickled in for Razov’s sixth goal of the season and his fifth in five games with the MetroStars. Nine minutes later, Cunningham beat Metro- Stars goalie Zach Wells for the game-tying goal.
After the score, Cunningham took off his jersey and ran to the corner flag in celebration, putting the jersey on the flag and waving it aloft. His antics drew him a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Wells made one save for the MetroStars, while Cannon stopped seven shots.
