Who: Nancy Gedeon of Denver, Colorado
Where: Medzev, Slovakia
Out and about: The focus of our two-week tour of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Krakow, Poland, was Medzev, Slovakia, the small town from which my Gedeon ancestors came. Perhaps more interesting than the obvious sites like the church, cemeteries, and iron works, was being invited into the residents’ homes and toasting “Gesundheit” at noon with homemade hard apple cider. Compared to the relative wealth and modernity of the larger cities we saw, such as Prague, Brno and Krakow, visiting Medzev was like stepping back in time.
Travel tip: The most convenient way to reach the small town of Medzev was by car. We rented a car in Prague and returned it in Krakow, stopping at several diverse locations along the way. But beware – road signage is sparse, making navigation to and through cities a challenge.
