Who: (top to bottom): Jenny Dattolo, Marissa Pledger and Catherine DeWerd, all from Arapahoe county, and Challenge School in Cherry Creek, Colorado

Where: In the Fiery Furnace at Arches National Park, near Moab, Utah

Out and about: Arches National Park has the densest concentration of stone arches in the world. The Fiery Furnace is an area in which the parallel sandstone fins are both tall and tightly packed. The girls are squeezing between two fins that are roughly 100 feet tall. The Fiery Furnace fins form a maze that the twelve-year-old in you can only dream about, but anybody can appreciate the fins, the arches, and the silence on a tour of the labyrinth.

Travel tip: Visitors are allowed into the Fiery Furnace only with permits, that can be purchased at the vistor center, or by taking a public tour. The twice-daily tours are limited to 25 people, so it pays to check in early the day before you wish to take a tour to reserve a spot. Moab, which has plenty of hotel rooms, is about a six-hour drive from Denver. If you go, consider returning to Colorado via the river road, highway 128, which heads west up the Colorado River from Moab.
