Who: Left: George and Andi Cody of Franktown and Doreen and Jim Ryan of Littleton, Colorado
Where: Prague, Czech Republic, the Mala Strana side of the Charles Bridge near the Gothic tower
Out and about: The four of us took a Rick Steves tour to Prague for one week. Our guide was born there and shared with us so much history and emotional personal experiences and, most importantly, the joy of
freedom. We took the Denver Post Travel section from April 12, 2004 for
the picture. Views of the Old Town Square with the magnificant lighting
of the Tyn Church, the Astonomical Clock and the Castle at night and
daytime views from the top of the Petrin Tower and Strahov Monastery in
the Castle area were beautiful. The Astronomical Clock was built in the
15th century when they thought the sun revolved around the earth. The
Communist Museum in Wenceslas Square is very interesting and made us
realize what they went through to gain freedom.
Travel tip: Don’t try to see Prague in 2 or 3 days. You’ll miss too much.
Take layers of clothing. We went the middle of October and it was cold in
the morning and at night but pleasant most of the day. A small, light
back pack works well for the extra jacket and gloves. A money belt
hidden under a sweater is recommended as there are pick pockets
especially in crowded areas. Always have coins in your pocket as all the
Water Closets(restrooms) require different amounts. Most of the younger
generation speak English. We flew into Vienna and spent 5 days there and
took the 5 hour train ride to Prague. Both places have a wonderful selection of music events every night and it is a great chance to see some beautiful churches and concert halls.
