Who: Eva of Romania and Lisa King of Denver, Colorado

Where: In the courtyard of Dracula’s Castle, Transylvania, Romania

Out and about: We spent several weeks this February, hosted by Romanian friends, who generously showed much of country’s historical and cultural sites. This Eastern European country is unspoiled by tourism and commercialism, but still is surprisingly modern. Romania is also is an amazing bargain- dinner for eight in a trendy restaurant was $38, and hotel rooms started at $25 . The stunning mountains make Coloradoans, especially, feel right at home.

Travel tips: We asked our hosts what Americans should know before they visit. They answered: “Don’t be so afraid, there are no vampires here”. Its true, the people we met were warm, sincere, funny, gracious, and genuinely interested in helping Americans in every way they can. But don’t expect most people to understand English- a Romanian dictionary is essential.
