Kiowa – After conferring with state officials from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment late Friday, staff from the Peaceful Valley Boy Scout Camp near Kiowa voluntarily agreed to close two of its three campsites for one week, beginning at noon today.

The decision was made after the number of individuals who have been experiencing intestinal illnesses at the camp for the past two days increased from 75 on Thursday to 126 Friday.

A preliminary stool sample from one of the ill children, submitted to the Department of Public Health and Environment’s laboratory, tested positive Friday for norovirus, a gastrointestinal illness that is passed in the stool of infected people.

A third site, Magness, will remain open because children at that campsite are separated from the other two and do not share facilities with them.
